Compared to that quartet, Sean Abbott might not get the same attention, but as he readies so suit up for Australia for the first time on home soil, there is a growing impression there will be a lot more heard about him soon enough.

The 22-year-old on Friday showed some of the fruits of his international elevation against Pakistan this month when he ripped through Queensland's top order with three quick wickets in the Blues' Matador Cup elimination final at Blacktown.

He will rejoin the national Twenty20 squad when it assembles next week for the three  matches against South Africa that open the international summer and, after a T20 appearance in Dubai and then a one-day debut in Sharjah, he will do so emboldened by his first taste of life in an Australian team.

"Ever since I started watching and playing cricket, I always wanted to be a part of that set-up and to finally be a part of that was a bit surreal," Abbott said. "I could have gone over and not played a game and been happy to be there ... and besides the heat and things like that it was a very good experience."

Abbott's rise in prominence follows a season in which he claimed the state's top honour, the Steve Waugh Medal. A breakthrough campaign for the multi-skilled Parramatta product was not without its challenges, though.  Only days before being named the Blues' player of the season he had to sit out the Sheffield Shield final, in which NSW claimed a first title in six years.

"It was a little bit tough to take at first, but there is still a job to do as 12th man and you're not going to help anyone out if you're down in the dumps and whingeing and not doing your bit for the team," he said.

"Although I was upset that I didn't play and I probably missed an opportunity there, I was still very happy with how I went that season and the contributions I made to help get the team to where they were."

The Blues reduced opponents Queensland to 5-68 on Friday but were set a target of 223 to reach in Sunday's Matador Cup final against Western Australia after a 112-run stand between Bulls captain James Hopes (72) and Ben Cutting (52).
