The Cessnock local government area was again successful at the 2014 Tidy Towns Awards—receiving a total of seven awards for a variety of projects across the region.

The Cessnock Waste Management Strategy 2014-19 was the winner of the Australia Packaging Covenant Waste Management Award, and the Litter Free Roadsides in Cessnock program took out the Packaging Covenant Litter Reduction Award
In the early learning centres category, Kurri Preschool also took out the Environmental Education Award, with Wollombi Public School and St. Philip’s Christian College also received highly commended awards in this category.
The Cessnock Mount View Biodiversity Corridor received a highly commended in the Office of Environment and Heritage Conservation Partner-ships Wildlife Corridors and Habitat Conservation award category along with the Cessnock Girl Guides for the Young Legends Award.
The Tidy Towns Awards presentation was held over the weekend of November 8-9 in Nundle - last year’s overall state winner.
The awards program began in 1981 and is the longest running initiative of Keep NSW Beautiful, rewarding environmental sustainability and investment in the future of our regional towns.
Now in its 34th year, the program recognises both group and individual efforts to protect, preserve and enhance local environments and communities across the state.
A contingent of community representatives and Cessnock City Council officers attended the awards and were delighted with the success.
“The results reflect the strong community involvement and commitment continually displayed by our 15 strong Tidy Towns groups,” Cessnock City Council’s, Sustainability Officer Tricia Donnelly said.
“The awards we received cover a range of projects including our waste management focus, environmental education, biodiversity and youth—reflecting the broad interest shown across our community.”
Cessnock Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent thanked local volunteers for all of their hard work in keeping the area tidy.
“The continued effort and selflessness of our many volunteers in our area cannot be understated, and is something Council is extremely proud of,” he said.
The overall NSW winner and host of the 2015 Tidy Towns Awards was Gloucester.
