The Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service completed the rescue of a bushwalker on the Great North Walk who had suffered an ankle injury earlier this year.
Tonight’s episode will feature the rescue and air crewman Graham ‘Nicko’ Nickisson said it was a difficult task because of the isolated and inaccessible area of the bushwalker’s location.
“For the life of us, we couldn’t find her,” he said.
“We had to communication with her via mobile and try to locate her using the sound of the chopper.”
Graham and a paramedic had to descend 180 feet on a winch cable which Graham said he is “not a fan” to gain access to the injured woman.
“She was hidden under an overhang of trees,” he said.
Graham said the team had to get the woman out before last light and was immediately flown to the John Hunter Hospital for treatment.
“A team was sent to retrieve her husband and their pet dogs who had been accompanying her,” he said.
Air Rescue is currently in its second season and offers viewers a behind the scenes look at some of the most challenging situations faced by the service crewmembers of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.
“The unique appeal of this gripping series has much to do with the incredibly brave crewmembers who risk their lives daily for their community,” General Manager of Strategic Marketing Westpac, John Harries said. “The audience can see firsthand the vast range of emotions felt by the crew, from the humour and mateship shared by crew at the base, to the heartfelt and honest moments shared between crew member and those who have been rescued.”
Tonight’s episode featuring the Mount Heaton rescue will air at 8pm on Channel 7.
