The event is being coordinated by Cessnock Greens councillor James Ryan.
Cr. Ryan said the decision to cut the rail line at Wickham on Boxing Day was "short-sighted".
"Reducing public transport doesn't make sense at any time," Cr. Ryan said.
"However for generations of Cessnock teenagers the train to Newcastle beach from Maitland was a way of escaping the summer heat and having fun.
"Public transport in Cessnock mostly consists of buses to Maitland Railway Station.
"The decision by the Baird Government to cut the rail is short-sighted.
"Not only do we want the rail to Newcastle to stay, we want passenger rail services returned to Cessnock."
The group will meet outside of Cessnock Library at 10am Friday to catch the 10.15am bus to Maitland station, then the 11.13am train into Newcastle station to walk to the beach.
