It was the first time Kurri-Weston had beaten Norths in five seasons, so it was a big result that leaves Kurri-Weston in outright second place going into the Christmas break.
The Warriors batted first, but none of the batters really got going. Returning club favourite Jack Bennett opened and top scored with 34, Josh Adams (23), Mick Heinrich (20) and skipper Tyler Power slogged 34 at the end to get up to a more-than-competitive 193.
With the ball, Heinrich was the star (5-43), ably supported by Haydon Fox (2-21), Matt Zechel (1-32) and Steve Abel (1-40) in a good all-round performance.
Second grade lost by 85 runs to competition leaders Norths. Kurri-Weston started well, having Norths in trouble at 7-113, but their tail end got away from them to eventually post 223.
Kurri-Weston never really threatened and were bowled out for 138 in the 26th over. Not being able to bat the allotted 50 overs is starting to become an issue for the team. Best on the day were Mick Hamilton (50), Dasher Fairfull (29), Brodie Roberts (2-39) and Liam Neild (2-17).
Third grade also took on the competition leaders in Raymond Terrace, and gave the game a real shake.
Kurri-Weston bowled Terrace out for 112 and went into the break confident of an upset. However, a steady loss of wickets saw Kurri-Weston bowled out for 78 in reply.
Best performers were Haydon Yates (3-17) and Lachie Vassella (3-24). Neil Smith (19), Lachie Styles (18) and Liam Dalibozek (10) were the only batsmen to reach double figures in a disappointing scorecard.
Fourth grade went down by six wickets to Thornton Park. Kurri Weston were all out for 80 and Thornton passed the total four wickets down. Jayden Herbert continued his good recent form taking 1-21 to go with 22 with the bat.
Fifth grade scored their third win in a row, downing Eastern Suburbs by three wickets. Kurri-Weston restricted Easts to 7-168 off their 40 overs. The main wicket takers were Andrew West (3-35) and Sam Whyburn (3-24).
The Warriors passed the total for the loss of seven wickets, with several batsmen contributing. Kyle Greenwood (37), Craig Whyburn (32), Ben Sharp (21) and West capping off a fine match with 20. The win leaves the team in a share of third place heading into the Christmas break.
The club’s annual Old Boys Day will be held on January 31 at Kurri Central for first grade’s last home game of the season.
A barbecue and refreshments will be supplied, so if you have been involved in either Weston Workers Cricket Club or Kurri Bowling Club Cricket Club in any capacity over the years, come down and support the current crop of players and catch up with some old mates.
