This is not Cr. Olsen’s first adventure for the cause – he trekked the Kokoda trail in October 2013 for the same cause.

The group of 14 trekkers aim to raise more than $60,000 this year, improving on the efforts of their Kokoda trail trek two years ago.

To prepare for the trek, Cr. Olsen has been doing boot camp, cardio, bike riding and running at least 50 kilometres a week.

He ran the New York marathon last November and will also run the London Marathon in April and Berlin Marathon in September before he heads to Machu Picchu.

Cr. Olsen aims to personally raise $10,000 for the rescue helicopter to help keep them in the air.

The rescue helicopter is a cause close to his heart, with his wife once unexpectedly having to use the service.

“The Westpac Rescue Helicopter is supplied as a free service and relies on these types of donations to survive, so if I can pay back a bit then that’s great,” he said.

It costs approximately $5000 every time the rescue helicopter is called out.

The helicopter service averages about 12 to 15 visits to the Cessnock local government area every month.

“Let’s hope none of us ever need it, but it is sure good to know it is there just in case we do,” Cr. Olsen said.

“Every cent I raise goes directly to the helicopter. All donations and help is much appreciated.”
