Teri Clark arrived home last Wednesday afternoon and a young couple were out the front of her home with Elroy.
She said they had found Elroy in their South Cessnock yard a couple of nights before and had read about his disappearance in The Advertiser on Wednesday, and decided to bring him home straight away.
She said Elroy had been bathed and was not distressed.
As reported last week, Elroy was taken from the Clarks’ Paxton property on the morning of January 18 after a hole was cut in their wire fence.
Fearing that he had been stolen for breeding or dog-fighting purposes, the Clarks contacted police and started a social media campaign to find their beloved pooch.
Mrs. Clark said they feel lucky to have Elroy back, considering there have been a number of recent incidences of dog theft in the Hunter.
She said while they still don’t know who took Elroy or why, they are very grateful to the people who brought him home.
“We are very lucky and very appreciative of those two young people. They brought him back because they knew it would mean something to us,” she said.
Mrs. Clark’s husband Brendon said he was “so relieved” when he got the call that his little buddy was home.
He said Elroy and their other dog, Maya, will be sleeping inside from now on.
He encourages other people who have had their dogs taken not to lose hope that they will return.
“I had a call from a lady in Queensland (who had seen it on Facebook) who said her dog was taken and came home after three months, and I just kept thinking about her,” he said.
“Don’t give up – just keep hoping.”
The Clarks thanked The Advertiser, The Herald, NX-FM and social media users for their support.
“Without it we have no doubt we wouldn’t have him back,” Mr. Clark said.
“It’s a happy ending.”
