Hundreds of people attended Cessnock's Australia Day celebrations on Monday morning, which included a community breakfast at East End Oval followed by the awards ceremony at East Cessnock Bowling Club.

Local GP, Dr. John Holly was named citizen of the year for his 30-plus years of dedication to his patients and the Cessnock community.
Branxton resident Errol Jordan was named senior citizen of the year for his community work with the Lions Club, the golf club, RSL sub-branch and Meals on Wheels.
Kearsley teenager Mackenzie Pringle received the young citizen of the year award for her efforts in organising a drought relief fundraiser, and performing at community events like Reclaim the Night and Relay For Life.
The community event of the year award went to Mount View High School's 2014 boys' captains, Murray Thompson and Jordan O'Brien, for organising a White Ribbon Day event and encouraging male students from their school and other high schools to take part.
The environmental award went to L.J. Hooker Cessnock and Kurri for their participation in the 3P's corporate sustainability program.
Cessnock Croquet Club received the heritage award for their restoration of the former Allandale Bowling Club to croquet lawns.
Sophie O'Brien received the sport award for her achievements in futsal and soccer.
Weston singing teacher Delma Whyte received the Marthaville Arts and Cultural Award.
Appreciation awards went to Christine Davey (for her 20-plus years teaching at Laguna Public School); Jane Hayes (for her involvement at Kearsley Public School); the Cessnock Youth Entertainment Committee and the Kurri Division of Legacy.
Thirteen local residents became Australian citizens in a naturalisation ceremony.
A presentation was also made to the Cessnock LGA's first baby born for 2015, Zoe Ivy Mae Quennell.
Australia Day ambassador, writer and producer, Peter Herbert attended the official proceedings with his wife Joanne, sons Ash and Louis and niece Sienna.
