After being sent into bat, Kurri-Weston amassed 9-228 from their 50 overs. Daniel Chapple anchored the innings with a controlled 65 at the top of the order, with Simon Marshall (29), Steve Abel (22) and Casey Capper (30) also contributing to the competitive total.
In reply, Thornton lost two early wickets to leave them facing an uphill battle, but they strung a few decent partnerships together and ended up needing 30 off the last two overs for victory.
Matt Zechel (3-54) and Steve Abel (0-23 off nine) bowled the crucial final overs to get the side home. Spinners Heinrich (2/39) and Jack Bennett (2/57) did a great job in the middle overs to restrict the run rate.
The win sees the Warriors maintain second spot on the ladder with four rounds remaining.
Second grade scored a convincing win over Thornton Park at Kurri Central to cement their spot in the top four.
Kurri-Weston bowled Thornton out for 74 and made light work of the run chase, passing the total for the loss of three wickets in the 15th over.
Liam Neild (3-12), Jay Bobba (3-22) and Haydon Yates (2-15) did most of the damage with the ball and returning club favourite Luke Duffield top scored with (20), Sam Dalibozek (16no) and Brian Taylor (12no) did enough in reply to get the chocolates.
Third grade had a good win against the second placed Western Suburbs to keep their faint semi-final hopes alive.
Wests batted first and scored 8-161 from their 45 overs with most of the bowlers getting amongst the wickets. Liam Dalibozek (2-23) returned the best figures and was supported by Matt Burgess, Lachie Vassella and the Styles boys all getting a wicket each.
Kurri-Weston started the chase well with opener Vassella anchoring the innings (42). The Warriors eventually passed the total for the loss of eight wickets in the 39th over. Others to contribute were Burgess (24), Sam Perry (15) and Ethan McGregor (14).
Fourth and fifth grades had the bye.
Kurri-Weston Cricket Club’s annual Old Boys Day is scheduled for this Saturday at Kurri Central, when first grade play their last home game of the season against old foes Eastern Suburbs.
The boys are hoping to see plenty of former players and/or officials from either Kurri Bowling Club Cricket Club or Weston Workers Cricket Club from any era turn up and make it a great atmosphere for the players. The club will be supplying a barbecue and cheap refreshments on the day.
