The school’s senior students of 2014 planted seeds given to the school by the show society at the end of last year.
They are growing corn, zucchini, cucumber and tomato along with eggs from the school’s chickens to enter into the display.
Millfield Public School principal Scott Anderson said the show’s primary school section is a great way to allow the kids to participate.
“It is a really good program the show runs in terms of getting the schools involved,” he said.
“It gets the kids engaged and gets the community engaged.”
Mr. Anderson said the children get so involved in the project that the school has implemented the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden project this year.
The program involves the students participating in garden and cooking classes each week, and two of the school’s teachers are currently undertaking training to teach the program.
Mr. Anderson said he is not sure how the school will go in the show competition this year due to the lack of warm weather, but hopes the ‘great Millfield soil’ will pull through for them again.
Branxton stock and station agent Neil Thomas has once again donated shields for the primary and high schools section.
This 2015 Cessnock Show will take place this Friday and Saturday, with poultry, flowers, vegetables, home craft and cooking competitions to be judged in the showground pavilion.
Entry forms for the produce, cooking and home craft sections are available at the Advertiser office. For more information, call the showground on 4990 1181.
