Police found a man with multiple stab wounds at an Edgeworth Street home about 1am on Sunday.
They attempted to save the 48-year-old but he died at the scene.
A short time later, as police were examining the scene, a motorist drove past and lost control, driving into the crime scene.
The man, 50, had also suffered multiple wounds and was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.
Detectives are investigating whether the motorist’s injuries were self-inflicted.
Police said in a statement that the two incidents were linked and the man was helping police with their inquiries.
It is understood both men were known to each other.
Central Hunter detectives are investigating.
