Robert Thompson cast a spell over his rivals at the rich Hunter and North West Racing Association’s championships qualifying heat at Tamworth last Thursday on the highly promising Voodoo Lad.

The lightly raced 3-year-old gelding, trained by close associate Rod Northam, scored a comfortable one-and-a-half lengths win that catapulted it into the $300,000 Country Championships final at Randwick on April 4.
The gelding’s winner’s cheque of $57,200 at Tamworth took the winner’s earnings to $179,660 from seven starts with four wins and two seconds.
Thompson wrapped up a successful day winning the last on the program on another Rod Northam-trained galloper Hot Vinni who came from well back in the field to claim victory.
Hot Vinni is also building up an impressive record with three wins from seven starts after coming off a solid run at Warwick Farm at its last start.
Thompson said Voodoo Lad was much fitter for its Tamworth assignment and believed there is still some improvement to come.
He also mentioned to television interviewers that he would be having the next day off to attend his son Brent’s wedding.
