Four Cessnock TAFE graduates were accepted into university this year after completing the Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation (TPC) in 2014.

Ben Vaughan gained a place in the engineering degree at the University of Newcastle and also received the Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship for Academic Excellence; Martha Sloane got into radiography at the University of Newcastle; Niels Heffernan got into radiography at Charles Sturt University and Lashae Blandford got into primary teaching at Avondale College.
Martha finished fourth overall in the state for TPC and Ben also finished in the top 10.
Martha, 24, said doing the TPC has given her the confidence to pursue her university dream.
“I don’t think I’d be surviving at uni without it,” she said.
Cessnock TAFE TPC coordinator Erol Engin said about 30 students are enrolled in this year’s course. He said the students are from varied backgrounds but have a common goal.
“They could be 40-plus and coming back to school, or the 18-year-old who didn’t succeed in a school environment and want a fresh start,” he said.
“It opens up a world of possibilities.”
Hunter TAFE offers the TPC with an emphasis on skill-based learning as well as discipline-specific content. It is a recognised tertiary entry qualification by the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC), NSW universities and some interstate universities.
