The Under-7s met with Medowie and for many of the boys who had played together last season, their experience was evident as they took to the paddock. The game was fast and hard with tries scored by Ash Metcalf, Tyson O’Leary, Hugo Sutherland and Lachlan Eather. Newcomers Chase and Jack Barlow showed they are going to be an asset to the team as the final score showed a convincing first round win to the boys.

The Under-8s may not have come up with a win in the first round of the season but the boys certainly showed they have determination. Coming up against a strong Singleton side, it took all the defensive skill of Oscar Dent and TC Metcalf to stall their attack, supported by some big tackles from Felix Sutherland. Jarrod Veal shut down the big guns and proved once again his skill in the forward pack. The only points to the Reds on the day came from Sinclair Marsh, who got over the line with a well-deserved try. The game was a steep learning curve for the boys but the coach was proud of the way they all worked well together and looks forward to the season ahead.

The Under-9s hosted Nelson Bay Gropers at HVG for the first game of the 2015 season. A somewhat rusty Reds started slowly and it took 15 minutes before either side posted any points. The Gropers struck first and they continued to dominate in attack. The Reds’ attack was led by the strong running Jack W and rampaging Jayden G. New recruits Cooper O and Isaac had strong games with Isaac earning himself man of the match with solid defence bringing down players twice his size. Tries to Jayden and Tom H kept the Reds in the game with the Gropers winning 35-10.

The Under-11s had a great first game of the season; they played as a team with all the boys looking for support which is very pleasing. Although they were defeated 33-14 the game was much closer, one or two missed tackles was the difference. The three new boys – Angus McClellan, Drew Thinius and Cairo Matherson – all showed great potential while Eden Schreiber thrived in his new position of hooker, strengthening the forwards.

The Under-12s had a good start to the season despite a loss to a well-drilled Nelson Bay team. The forwards worked hard all game and the backs enjoyed throwing the ball around, which resulted in a couple of tries. Standouts on the day were Allan and Fitzy in the backs and Shannon hitting it up in the forwards.
