The list was compiled from travellers’ ratings and reviews on the TripAdvisor site.
Last year the city made headlines when it ranked sixth in TripAdvisor’s ‘Best of 2014’ list.
The Travellers’ Choice top 10 was headed by Sydney, followed by Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns, Port Douglas, Hobart, Margaret River, Noosa, Adelaide and Cessnock.
Cessnock City Council economic development manager Jane Holdsworth is pleased with the city’s recognition via one of the world’s largest travel websites.
“Cessnock is home to the vineyards, but has so much to offer visitors in addition to our world renowned food and wine,” she said.
“We are very used to being on an international stage. We attract world-class music acts such as the Rolling Stones, hosted the Japan national football team for the 2015 Asian Cup and this weekend Rod Stewart will perform in our backyard.
“Cessnock is an authentic place to visit, we are very friendly people and we offer excellent customer service.”
A performance by the Eagles at Hope Estate earlier this month attracted more than 19,000 visitors to the Hunter Valley wine region.
Cessnock Mayor Bob Pynsent believes Cessnock’s popularity is because it offers such a diverse range of activities including ballooning, golf, nature and heritage experiences as well as wine tasting in a peaceful rural atmosphere.
The Hunter Valley Visitor Centre is ready to receive more than 900 visitors a day over the upcoming Easter to Anzac Day period.
Visitor centre coordinator Melissa George confirmed the centre had been working hard to support the anticipated influx of visitors.
“This Easter we are fully prepared to showcase Cessnock at its best,” she said.
“We have a wonderful range of resources to support our visitors and have prepared a comprehensive list of businesses trading over the period.”
