Dr. Verrills will is among 12 local ‘stars’ who have been partnered with a professional dance instructor to learn a routine that will be performed at the gala event at Wests Leagues Club on May 1.
Each star will fundraise for Cancer Council NSW in the lead up to the event, and Dr. Verrills will hold a cocktail evening at De Iuliis Wines on April 10 as her major fundraiser.
A researcher at the University of Newcastle and Hunter Medical Research Institute, Dr. Verrills said the Stars of Newcastle event has pushed her outside of her comfort zone.
“The dance training is reminding me about muscles that I had forgotten about, and as a researcher I know first-hand how important the fundraising is and what a difference in makes in the fight against cancer, so I’m really proud to be involved,” she said.
“One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and over 43,000 Australians die each year from this awful disease.
“I have dedicated my life to finding a cure and to end the suffering from this disease. The work that researchers are doing, has led to huge improvements in cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.”
The cocktail evening will include fine food from the 2 Fat Blokes Restaurant with wine and dancing under the stars.
The evening will start at 7pm; tickets are $90 and can be bought here.
