The kindergarten classes learnt about Japan and Australia.
They cooked and ate traditional foods, dressed up in traditional clothing and did craft activities including colouring in and decorating the national flag.
Stage one classes learnt about all things English, Australian and French. They tasted traditional foods, engaged in craft activities, discovered heritage and looked at pictures of famous monuments.
Stage two students focused on India and Japan. The lessons taught the children about the origin of the flag, clothing, food, religion, fun facts and language.
Stage three classes learnt about Germany and China. Their activities included learning about traditional music and celebrations, sport, geography, cultural misconceptions, food, photos and maps and the students also talked about the differences to Australia.
This is the first year Abermain Public School has celebrated Harmony Day on such a high scale.
Stage one teacher Leanne Jarlett organised the day and the idea of the children learning about the different countries.
She said it is important for the children to learn about other countries and their cultures.
The message she wanted to send to the children is that ‘it doesn’t matter what your culture is we all belong.’
“Children are children regardless of where you come from,” she said.
Ms. Jarlett said the children had a ball engaging in the activities on the day, and that the school plans to continue to recognise Harmony Day in a similar fashion in years to come.
