The year six student, who has not long returned from the Little Athletics NSW State Track and Field Championships, has been picked in the Hunter PSSA under-12 Rugby League team to compete at the state championships from June 16-18.
Jonah, 11, was nominated by assistant principal Steven Morgan to trial for the zone team, where he was selected to go through to the regional try-outs.
The trials were held at Valentine on March 24 where Jonah was one of 13 children picked for the Hunter team.
Jonah said it felt pretty good to be picked because he played well all day.
Jonah plays on the wing, where he uses his speed from the athletics track to make breakaways and score tries.
Mr. Morgan said he nominated Jonah for the zone trial because of his natural ability in the sport, but he said the up-and-comer just ran his own race from there.
“He just plays a good all-round game, he works well in his team, he knows his job and what he has to do out on the field,” Mr. Morgan said.
Jonah started playing rugby league when he was six, after falling in love with the game from watching it on TV.
He hopes to one day play for the Knights, like his favourite player Akuila Uate.
He is looking forward to the state competition to get to know the other kids better and hopefully get through to the next stage of selection.
