The team – comprising Year 5 students Keegan Harris, Jack Sellars and Andrea Pinchen along with Riley Saxby of Year 6 – placed third in the mixed open 200-metre freestyle Peter Dobson Relay (for schools of 25 to 54 students).
The relay was won by St. John’s Trangie (from the Narromine Shire) with fellow Hunter team Sandy Hollow finishing second.
The Mulbring team qualified for the state championships after wins at the Cessnock Small Schools Carnival (where they broke a 10-year-old record), then the zone and regional championships.
They improved their time by 13 seconds throughout those competitions, and at the state carnival they slashed 3.43 seconds off between the qualifying heat and the final.
Riley also made the final of the 12-years boys’ 50-metre freestyle, finishing ninth overall in the state.
Mulbring Public School principal Donna Lennard said it was a great result for the small school.
“As a school community, we are all extremely proud of the high calibre of our student’s skills and their level of dedication in achieving this outstanding result,” she said.
Hunter Region team manager Kylie Hill said the relay team was a credit to Mulbring Public School.
“Jack and Riley were offered the chance to swim in an extra relay each, and they took it without hesitation. I am so happy for the kids and so proud of this area,” she said.
It was a successful meet for the Hunter team, with 31 finalists winning six individual medals and two relay team medals.
