In the season opener at Townson Oval last Saturday, the Bulldogs could not chase down the South Newcastle Lions, losing 32-24.
Despite an 18-all half time score, the Bulldogs were unable to capitalise for Campton’s 200th Real NRL first grade match.
The Lions started like a dream, scoring after just 58 seconds after a Steven Widders bat-back from an attacking bomb to second rower Beau Simpson, converted by Scott Briggs for a 6-0 nil lead.
The Bulldogs hit back in the 11th minute through a brilliant flick pass from halfback Theeran Pearson, linking with skipper Daniel Abraham to score under the posts.
Referee Graham Stair spared Souths five-eighth Scott Briggs from the sin bin after a needless high-shot on Abraham as he scored the try. Pearson’s conversation made it 6-all.
Kurri took the lead five minutes later with a short ball from homecoming former NRL hooker Terence Seu Seu to Ben Wyborn, going 12-6 up.
The lead see-sawed quickly with two tries to Souths through Jake Lawrence and Steven Widders put them up 18-12.
However, it was short lived as the Bulldogs stringed an 80-metre try together from a scrum, courtesy of Scott Dunn weaving to send winger Wylie Manton for a runaway 50-metre converted try to lock the scores up at the break.
The Lions roared the loudest in the second half, dominating possession and turning the luck of the bounce into three converted tries to Scott Briggs and a Tim Christie double, taking an unassailable 32-18 lead. Poor fifth tackle options and handling errors took the Bulldogs out of the game.
However, Kurri saved the best for last as hooker Seu Seu broke the line for former Helensburgh Tiger prop Brock ‘Happy’ Gilmour, who fed an inside ball back to try-scorer Scott Dunn seven minutes from time – support play echoing of the razzle-dazzle of Kurri’s 2013 charge to the Real NRL grand final.
In the lower grades, the reserves were shot down by South’s 24 unanswered halftime points, losing 30-6; open age lost 50-12 and the under-19s slayed the Lions 34-0.
