At an extraordinary meeting last Tuesday, council resolved that further assistance would be provided to the community in wake of the recent natural disaster.

Kerbside collection of green storm debris and storm-damaged household goods will occur as resources allow until May 20 for eligible and registered residents.

Council has identified areas where residents have experienced inundation of water in their homes and require assistance with removing bulky, household waste.

Kerbside pickups for green storm debris waste will focus on urban areas and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

The May 20 timeframe coincides with the Environmental Protection Authority’s 30-day exemption of the waste levy to areas affected by the natural disaster.

Council’s general manager Stephen Glen said the collection will be available for residents in areas heavily affected by the natural disaster event.

“We want to provide relief for affected residents undergoing significant trauma and distress,” Mr. Glen said. 

“It is important that customers contact us and register for pickup of kerbside waste if it is required.”

Unregistered waste will not be collected and it will not be possible to advise customers of collection timeframes as this may vary due to volumes, locations and other issues.

Residents who are able are still encouraged to take advantage of the free service operating out of the Cessnock waste facility – where flood-damaged material and green waste can be dropped off from 8.45am to 4.30pm daily.

Council encourages green waste to be separated wherever possible.

Eligible residents should register by May 20 by calling 4993 4236 or emailing council@cessnock.nsw.gov.au with their name, address, phone number, type of pickup (i.e. green, general, domestic, mixed waste etc.) and approximate volumes.
