The Wiggles' Emma Watkins and Lachlan Gillespie have announced their engagement.

The yellow and purple Wiggles retold the story of their proposal to the Daily Telegraph, with Gillespie explaining how he proposed to his future wife by reading a romantic poem at the couple's favourite beach spot on Sydney Harbour.

"We were sitting by the water and Lachy started reading a poem... and I kept interjecting, then he started to kneel and I said, 'Oh my goodness this is happening.'" Watkins said.

"He does a lot of poems on stage... but I thought this one was very good."

The Wiggles' Twitter account shared the news this morning, wishing the couple a "big Wiggly congratulations".

Watkins, 25, and Gillespie, 29, went public with their romance in March after dating for two years.

They are both members of the "new" Wiggles lineup, which joined original member Anthony Field in May 2012.

Watkins, in the yellow skivvy, replaced original member Greg Page, while Gillespie replaced the original purple Wiggle, Jeff Fatt.

They had both performed with the children's group in backing dancer and costume roles, before being promoted to a coloured skivvy.

The couple, who are looking at a 2016 wedding, have said they might just play Hot Potato on the dance floor.

"Everyone from The Wiggles will be there... we might incorporate some Wiggles music," Watkins said.
