Ending a three-game losing streak, which included defeats by Souths (32-24), Lakes United (40-22) and Wests (25-19), the Bulldogs were dominant from the outset.
It took only two minutes for 17-year-old winger, third-generation Bulldog first-grader Kyle Smith to score from a Terence Seu Seu bomb.
The Pickers struck back in the ninth minute to make it 6-all.
Kurri halfback Hayden Grainger took advantage of a held-up call stoppage, with a last-tackle show-and-go to lead 12-6 after 15 minutes.
Maitland levelled the scores soon after through centre Ryan Lacy after Bulldogs lock Mitch Cullen failed to diffuse an in-goal grubber.
A double to eventual players’ player Ryan Walker saw Kurri enter the sheds at half time leading 22-12.
Back from Knights NSW Cup duty, Bulldogs forward Michael Steele scored soon after to lead 28-12.
Maitland crossed in the 60th minute to come within striking distance at 28-18.
However, the revival was short-lived as a try to Brad ‘Wylie’ Manton and a second to Kyle Smith shut Maitland out.
The Pickers scored a consolation try on the bell.
The Bulldogs reclaimed the Mercury Shield from Maitland and went ahead 8-7 on the tally since the trophy was introduced in 2005.
Reserve grade held out Maitland 16-10 in a very physical display. Players’ player went to Josh Papworth.
Open age won their first game of the season 28-20, with strong defence and a 90-metre Tyler Sowter runaway penalty try (after an infringement as the try was scored) among the highlights. Players’ player went to Ryan Evans.
The under-19s lost their second straight game, 32-4 – but are hoping to turn things around on Saturday in the round three washout against Macquarie Scorpions at Lyall Peacock Oval
Under-19s start at 10.45am, first grade kick off at 3pm.
