The learning centre approached Bunnings, who were very enthusiastic about the idea and came on board straight away.
Seven students and three staff from the CDLC went to the store for three consecutive Mondays for an hour and a half each visit, building billy carts that the students got to keep and take home with them.
Bunnings provided all of the materials for the billy carts, as well as four staff each day to assist with construction and also supplied morning tea for the students and teachers each day.
Four Bunnings team members joined the students at East End Park on June 15 to enjoy riding the billy carts and had a barbecue to celebrate the completion of the project.
CDLC teacher Steve Gaul said the students thoroughly enjoyed the project and impressed the Bunnings staff with their efforts.
“The whole project worked very well with students being fully engaged in the building process and getting to keep their cart was an added benefit,” he said.
“Their behaviour was fantastic and the Bunnings staff told us how well the students worked.
“The CDLC would like to thank Bunnings for their cooperation in this project; they could not have done more for our centre and our students.”
