The dinner dance was held to celebrate Aboriginal culture while showcasing local Aboriginal talent.

Guests were privileged to experience Aboriginal dancers from Cessnock Public School who danced to Treaty; and the Imi-Wonna-Roi dancers Chantel Roberts and Chantel Sinclair performance was breathtaking.

Guests were invited to learn culturally-appropriate dances and participate in activities led by Joey Griffiths and the Birrawal dance group. Male guests learnt traditional kangaroo dance moves and the ladies learnt traditional emu dance moves.

Georgia Dembeck sang two powerful songs, one in her people’s language, captivating the audience with her talent.

After the three-course meal, guests were invited to stay late and dance the night away.

“I was so happy to see so many people in attendance and I hope to see more people from the wider community next year helping us celebrate this important event,” local Aboriginal man Kym Duncan said.

“The Black Creek Corporation Committee has done a wonderful job in the organisation of this event.”

To continue the NAIDOC Week celebrations, a  family fun day will be held this Saturday at Cessnock TAFE grounds.

Activities will include a flag raising ceremony, arts, music and rides. Wrist bands for all-day rides can be bought for $10 on the day.
