The Goannas had last weekend off due to a split round in the draw, giving the players an opportunity for a much-needed rest and recovery.
However, there are two more free weekends scheduled in the run to the finals, and according to Goannas president David Woodbury, the lack of continuity in the draw has frustrated players, coaches and supporters.
“Cessnock have had a reasonably settled squad during the season so far but in the past couple of games the availability of key players has definitely affected the team,” Woodbury said.
Kerrod Holland, Tyrone Amey, Sam Apthorpe and Noah Easton have all missed games due to Knights commitments and Woodbury said the club is pleased for these players to have reached this level.
It has also given opportunities to youngsters Zeb Dunstan, Jai See, Oliver Powell and Dean Wearing to get time in first grade.
Reserve grade have found form, winning four of their past five matches and are pressing for a position high on the table come finals time.
“Coach Dan Smailes has the team playing with great confidence and self-belief and there is no reason why they should not be challenging the top sides,” Woodbury said.
Open age have had a number of close losses and got their first win recently at home against Maitland.
“Coach Ethan Hodson in his first year in the job has worked really hard with the boys and although the finals are now out of reach they will be no doubt giving their all in the remaining games,” Woodbury said.
First grade will kick-off at 3pm Saturday at Peacock Field, Toronto. If you can't make it to the game, check out the BarTV livestream below.
The Goannas are back at home on Saturday, August 8 against South Newcastle.
