Thompson, who guided Shazza’s Bubbles to a win on the second day of the northern rivers carnival, struck again when the 5-year-old mare took out Sunday’s Sawtell Cup, giving Thompson his third win in the race over the past four years.
The win further underlined his close association with trainer Ross Stitt who also prepared Thompson’s previous cup winners Single Spirit and Southern Shimmer.
Thompson praised the mare’s “good tough win” and indicated he would most likely link up with the winner if she attempts the Coffs Harbour Gold Cup on August 6.
Earlier on the program, Thompson scored on the Neil Godbolt-trained Saaher who was going to the races for the second time after a good second during the recent Grafton carnival.
At Taree on Friday, Thompson again linked up with a Grafton carnival maiden performer, Portatorio to score at double-figure odds for trainer Jenny Graham.
He then had to share the spoils in a dead heat on the last of the day on Testalina, trained at Wyong by Alan Denham.
Still, the “carnival” was not over with Thompson coming away with a double from Saturday’s Broadmeadow program. He opened his account with a strong win on maiden performer Sunbury, also trained by Denham.
One of his most popular winners would have been Three Sheets who took out the class 1 over the 900 metres dash.
Sent out a short-priced favourite, Three Sheets made up plenty of ground to claim victory, much to the excitement of the big mix of locals in its ownership.
The 3-year-old Stratum gelding is trained by Jeremy Sylvester and raced in the ownership of two syndicates with 18 owners listed in the race book.
Three Sheets has built up an impressive record of two wins and three minor placings from five starts with prizemoney totalling $27,550.
Rising 7-year-old gelding Collar gave Cessnock trainer Jeremy Sylvester a well-deserved win in city class with a dashing front running effort at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
Collar franked the form of his second in the Jungle Juice Cup to stablemate Youthful King earlier this month, taking his career record to six wins and nine minor placings for 37 starts.
Sylvester, who races the gelding in a family partnership, picked up Collar at a Gold Coast Dispersal Sale for $5000 in what has proved a bargain buy with the gelding notching four wins for the new stable.
Collar went through the 2012 Inglis Easter Sale ring and was knocked down to Rogerson Bloodstock for $160,000.
He did his early racing in Victoria with a win at Swan Hill and a listed race at Flemington.
Subsequent wins under Sylvester’s care have been in Queensland, Tamworth and the Wellington Cup.
Three-kilogram-claiming apprentice Samantha Clenton always had Collar in a forward position and held off late challenges for a strong win over the 1600 metres journey.
Sylvester said after the win that Collar could be set for a feature race at the upcoming Coffs Harbour cup carnival.
