The Cessnock Hornets surrendered a handy second-half lead and wasted a series of chances to crash 3-2 to Wallsend at Birmingham Gardens on Sunday.

After conceding a scrappy goal, Mitchell Cox was released behind the defence and slotted into an empty net.
Wade Attewell then put the Hornets in front with a well-taken goal to lead 2-1 at the break.
In the second half a series of golden chances from Cessnock were wasted in succession, with Wallsend setting a high line and getting caught on the break.
Missed chances cost the Hornets dearly as Wallsend levelled up with a 15 minutes to go, with Cessnock scoring an own goal with minutes left to break their hearts.
Flanagan’s Menswear Players’ Player was Jake Peters.
The Hornets’ under-23s were worthy 3-0 winners and pushed their finals claim further, jumping to second spot with two weeks left.
Both teams were keen to play quality football and Cessnock were looking dangerous when in possession.
Sam Garaty scored a poacher’s goal, robbing a defender of the ball and slotting into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.
Just before the break Sam Woods caught the keeper out with a cross from deep being taken by the wind and floating into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Cessnock were dominant from this point on and were unlucky not to score more, with Toby King finding the net late.
Cessnock defended well all over the park and Flanagan’s Menswear Player’s Player was Josh Bower.
The under-19s played a very entertaining 1-1 draw, and were dominant in possession for most of the game.
The exciting brand of football played was pleasing for coaching staff, as were the contributions of Luke Ford and Jayden Arriguetti.
The under-17s had a tough day at the office, starting with only 10 players and finishing with nine. The 7-0 scoreline was cruel but the Hornets’ effort and attitude was commendable.
The Hornets have the bye this week, but will hold their bowls day at Bellbird Bowling Club on Sunday from 10.30am. All senior players and coaches must attend, with team nomination forms in the sheds. Supporters and parents are welcome.
