The first artwork to greet visitors to Wollombi’s Old Fire Shed Gallery this weekend will be a large portrait of one of Wollombi’s most fondly remembered characters: the late Mel Jurd, creator of the famous ‘Dr. Jurd’s Jungle Juice’ and long-time proprietor of the Wollombi Tavern.

A finalist in the 1990 Doug Moran Portrait Prize, the portrait was painted by Wollombi artist John Niven Richards, whose one man show ‘Reality Art’ opens at the gallery at 10am this Saturday.
Portraits aside, the show is dominated by landscapes, especially of rural Australia – Richards’ great passion.
“It’s a joy to capture and preserve the things and places I’ve seen and loved,” he said.
Richards’ gift for drawing, obvious from an early age, led to a long and successful career as an illustrator and graphic artist.
‘Reality Art’ will run for three weeks, open 10am to 4pm Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
