Footy Colours Day is held each year to support the Fight Cancer Foundation, which helps to provide care, support and treatment for cancer patients and their families and to fund cancer research.
This is the first year that Branxton Pharmacy has been involved in the charity day, which coincides with Lee Grundy’s two-year anniversary of owning the chemist.
Mr. Grundy said the staff wanted to support a cause, and he saw an advertisement for the Footy Colours Day, which he thought would be a worthwhile initiative, with cancer now being the biggest killer in Australia.
“To raise money towards research but also raise awareness about how big it is,” Mr. Grundy said.
“Everyone knows someone that’s got cancer.” His own mother lost her battle with the disease.
Being in the health industry, Mr. Grundy said they come into contact with plenty of people affected by cancer, but hear some good stories too.
They are hoping the day is a positive way to help out, and for the staff and customers to have a bit of fun in their footy colours.
“It’s quite exciting, everyone here is so excited about it,” Mr. Grundy said.
“I’m hoping for a little bit of banter [about the footy colours].
“I threatened to wear a Manly jersey, they [staff] threatened to walk out,” he joked.
There will be a morning tea and barbecue on the day, along with a raffle with a lot of businesses in the area donating prizes, along with some of the local wineries.
“We’ve received lots of community support,” Mr. Grundy said.
“Thank you to everyone for the support and to all the businesses who donated.”
