In their first grand final appearance for 12 years, Cessnock Rugby Club went down to Singleton Army 17-12 in the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union Patron’s Cup decider.

Cessnock was down to 14 men straight after the kick-off, when a player was sin-binned for a dangerous high tackle.
Cessnock’s attack was unlucky several times; their centres being grabbed at the last gasp.
Cessnock went to the break leading 7-5 through a try and conversion to Dallas Mountford.
Just after half time Cessnock were down to 14 men again after another high tackle, and then defended their line for the next 20 minutes.
Army scored a converted try to make it 12-7, then Cessnock scored out wide through Cody Herring to level the scoreline.
With three minutes remaining Army scored out wide, making the score 17-12.
Cessnock kicked off and regathered, and made it over the line only to be denied, leaving the full time score 17-12 to Army.
