This year’s event – at the Cessnock TAFE grounds on Friday, September 11 – will include favourites such as the ‘Table of Fire’, lanterns galore, face painters and some really great musicians.
There are some exciting new features such as roving musicians, Beat Dice (one of the installations that featured at Vivid 2015) and a couple of surprises that should prove to be winners for both young and old.
“Spring Awakening is an enriching cultural experience that is a little out of the ordinary,” Cessnock Performing Arts Centre coordinator Vicki Sienczuk said.
“It’s an opportunity to warm yourself among the flames, sip a hot drink and enjoy good food while you take in live music and installations of fire and light with family and friends.”
Schools have been working frantically to produce lanterns for a parade that will start from the Council carpark at 6pm and head towards the Cessnock TAFE grounds.
The parade will be led by St Patricks’ school percussion band.
Those wanting to get involved can make a lantern at Cessnock Library on Monday, Kurri Library on Tuesday or at the Cessnock Art Gallery on Saturday and Tuesday (contact the venues for times).
Materials will be provided; please bring your own pair of scissors. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Another exciting new feature of this year’s festival is a photo competition.
Send your best Spring Awakening photo to The Advertiser via email or Facebook, or on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #springawakeningcessnock (one entry per person) by midnight on Sunday, September 13.
The photos will be put into a gallery on The Advertiser’s website, where readers will be able to vote for their favourite shot.
Voting will close at 5pm September 18 and the top three photos will be published in the Advertiser the following week.
The photo with the most votes will receive four tickets to the Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow at Cessnock Performing Arts Centre next year.
The best photos will also be used as part of next year’s Spring Awakening promotions.
Spring Awakening will run from 6pm to 9.30pm at the Cessnock TAFE grounds on Friday, September 11.
