The park's king cobras Raja (male) and Jennifer (female) got busy on Tuesday in a bizarre but frightening mating ritual that featured intertwined necks and copious amounts of scale licking.

The reptile park in the Central Coast is the only zoo in Australia to breed the venomous snakes in captivity.

The last successful pairing was 10 years ago and resulted in 20 baby king cobras.

No other zoo has been able to repeat the dangerous procedure.

"Danger comes where the male king cobra, due to his size, could overpower and bite one of the reptile keepers or even eat the female," reptile park general manager Tim Faulkner said.

"The closest comparison Australia has to the king cobra is the native king brown snake [Australia's largest venomous snake], which wouldn't stand a chance against the much larger king cobra due to its powerful venom and ability to eat other snakes."

Signs of success will be evident in 28 days if Jennifer exhibits a pre-lay shed of skin.

Should this process take place, she will lay eggs 28 days later and babies will be born in February next year.
