In fact Waller is relishing the occasion of having 11 of the 16 starters in the group 2 event, maintaining the figure reflects the talent his vast Sydney operation has under its care. And yes, record books across the racing world are claiming the feat as a genuine record for a horse race anywhere.

The process of managing such an operation will begin early on Friday when emails will be sent to the 11 sets of owners on how the trainer expects their horses to perform this Saturday afternoon.

"It's been said that a trainer up in Queensland had nine runners in the one race. Actually I think he trained the entire field himself but this number I'm told is a record," Waller said.

And even with such a vice-like grip on the Chelmsford, according to bookmakers he won't be taking home first prize.

Waller is just keen to see how his Cox Plate and Caulfield and Melbourne Cup competitors in the race perform as they make their way towards their spring targets.

The premiership trainer said he would arrive an hour before the first race at Randwick on Saturday and immediately give the instructions for all 11 starters over to the stewards so there was no thought of any wrongdoing with this extraordinary number of starters.

"I don't want any hint of impropriety or thoughts of race fixing. When you have this number you've got to make terribly sure the stewards know where the horses will be placed and in what position. So if a long shot gets out of the pack and beats my favourite, stewards will know well in advance the tactics I will adopt," he said. "I will have fully briefed all 11 jockeys within an hour of the race, they will know exactly what they have to do and what our expectations are.

"But in this day and age jockeys have done loads of homework prior to the meeting or even prior to me talking to them. I'll just go over how the horse needs to be ridden and then wait and see how the race pans out," Waller said.

The former New Zealand trainer, who has rewritten the record books of the number of winners he's trained in Sydney, will also physically saddle up all 11 of his runners.

"It's a little bit like an army drill: it takes about a minute for me to get each girth tight and ready to go, I have someone opposite me and someone standing ahead of me directing the traffic.

"It works well. It takes just three of us to work through all of the horses and once they're saddled up they go out and be paraded and I get a chance to put my feet up," Waller quips.

On Saturday Waller believes that Hartnell, trained by John O'Shea, and the Gai Waterhouse prepared Pornichet will be the ones to beat. From his own stable he's confident that Kermadec, Royal Descent and Beaten Up will be his frontline chances at winning the weight-for-age event.

"I've got another four horses in the field that are getting ready for a crack at the Melbourne Cup so I'll watch them with interest as they'll be stayers of the future. And the others are all genuine group 2 horses making their way up the ladder but are all working and performing well enough to be a part of a group 2 race," Waller said.

After the $250,000 event the trainer will make his way through the post-mortems of all 11 competing jockeys.

"And after we look at all of that we will be able to inform owners how well their horse went and where we look like placing him next," he said.

"I hope at the end of the spring people are saying the Chelmsford Stakes supplied the winner of every major race in Melbourne and Sydney this spring and then I can really put my feet up."
