Anglican Parish of Mount Vincent and Weston parish priest Fr Chris Jackson said the recent incidents of animal cruelty and neglect in the Hunter Region have shocked and saddened many people.
He said the service will give people a chance to come together with their animals for an enjoyable afternoon and celebrate the joy pets bring to their lives.
“We all know how much happiness our pets give to us,” Fr Chris said.
“They keep us company and make us laugh.
“Some people rely on their livestock for their livelihoods.
“We’d like to celebrate the importance of our animals with a simple outdoor service at our beautiful church.”
October 4 is also the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Animals.
“Saint Francis was a devout man who appreciated the beauty of nature and animals,” Fr Chris said.
“He loved all creatures and saw in creation a sign of God’s goodness and love.
“In that same spirit we’d like to welcome all animals – dogs, cats, horses, cows, goldfish or whatever else you have at home!”
Following the short service of blessing at 1pm, all are invited to remain for a BYO picnic lunch. Please bring an outdoor chair or picnic rug.
Christ Church is located on Mount Vincent Road, Mount Vincent (off Leggetts Drive). For more information, call Fr Chris 0401 717 686.
