The Orange Pigeon is an adult wish-granting organisation that helps to provide a wish or a simple comfort to adults with life threatening or terminal illnesses.
Its name is derived from William of Orange – the homing pigeon from WWII who flew over 260 miles from the Netherlands to England to deliver the first SOS message that British soldiers were in dire straits, saving 2000 soldiers.
The Orange Pigeon has granted 90 wishes to people around Australia and hopes to reach 100 before their fourth birthday in January.
Despite being the only organisation of its kind in Australia, many people are unaware it exists, but Kate is holding a trivia night to help raise funds and awareness about the cause.
Kate, who operates Kate’s Cakemania, first became involved with the charity in 2013 when she saw on a cake forum that the organisation was seeking a cake maker to help out with one of the wishes.
The wish was for a lady named Anne who lived in Newcastle and wanted to be “queen for the day” which involved having a royal cake.
The Orange Pigeon founder Jenny Howell-Clark said Kate was an amazing help and a key player in the wish coming to fruition.
“Kate completely donated her time and service making Anne’s cake – there was so much love put into it,” she said.
Kate then travelled down to Melbourne to see Craig Coombes and Adam Hills perform and ran into some of the ladies from the Orange Pigeon.
After chatting with the ladies, she decided to hold a fundraiser to assist them and the charity.
Since deciding to run the event, Kate said it has been a struggle to gain support due to people not being aware of The Orange Pigeon and what they do.
“It’s been difficult because no-one knows them here,” she said.
“I just want to get the word out there.”
Kate said seeing first-hand the work of The Orange Pigeon and what it means for people drives her to want to help.
“I see how little things can bring joy into their lives,” she said.
The Orange Pigeon has a waiting list of up to six months and has a limit of $1500 per wish due to limited funding.
“They’ve had to turn so many down,” Kate said.
“People are dying before they can get the money together.”
Kate is hoping to raise $2000 from the trivia night, which will pay for at least one wish.
Jenny said it means a lot that Kate is doing so much for the charity.
“We feel so privileged that Kate cares so much about The Orange Pigeon that she is organising this fundraiser,” Jenny said.
“We rely almost solely on fundraising with very limited donations, so it will be an enormous boost to us.”
The trivia night will be held at Hamilton North Bowling Club on October 24 and Kate is currently seeking donations of prizes and decorations for the night.
Tickets are $25 per person, for more information or if you can assist contact Kate on 0402 143 775 or Nita on 0407 330 537.
