Demand for plasma, the golden-coloured part of blood used to make 18 different life-saving treatments, is growing by 10 per cent nationally each year.
Blood Service spokesperson Jemma Falkenmire said the Hunter mobile blood service, which visits Cessnock every 12 weeks, is one of only two mobiles across the state equipped to collect plasma.
“Support for blood donation in the community means we can collect eight plasma donations each visit, while still meeting hospital demand for traditional red cell donations,” Ms Falkenmire said.
“The Hunter mobile was chosen as one of the state’s top mobile blood services, supported locally by an army of 390 Cessnock lifesavers.
“Plasma will be introduced on board visits to Williamtown, Gloucester, Muswellbrook, Cessnock, Singleton, Scone and Salamander Bay, boosting collections collectively by 350 each year.
“The change will allow loyal blood donors in these areas to donate blood more frequently, with the hope of attracting new donors to the service.”
Ms Falkenmire said plasma was an important and versatile component of blood used to help treat leukaemia, cancer, burns victims, and those with auto-immune disorders.
“Specialised equipment and training is required to collect plasma, which returns red blood cells to the donor and takes only the plasma component,” she said.
“Other sites may be considered in the future to meet an increased demand, those wanting to give plasma in the meantime can make a donation at either Newcastle or Maitland donor centres.”
One local lifesaver is Nancy Wratten, who has donated blood six times and donated plasma for the first time on Monday.
She said while donating plasma takes a little longer, it does not hurt and helps many more people.
“I feel like I’m doing something for someone,” she said.
She said she always has a laugh when she gives blood and encourages anyone to roll up their sleeves and donate.
“Do it, you’ll feel good about yourself,” she said.
The mobile blood service will be at Cessnock Plaza on October 14 and 15 from 1pm to 6.30pm, and October 16 from 9.30am to 3pm.
