The book is his tenth instalment of the Frontier series, which inspired an international TV mini-series, and focuses on “the other side of Australian history” that isn’t about convicts, bushrangers or Gallipoli.
He said the Australian history he has discovered is almost like cowboys and Indians, and is more than just the history that the media usually presents.
“These are the things I bring into my books,” he said.
“The things people forget about.”
Watt himself has served in the armed forces, which he said helps when writing as he understands the psychology of the military.
He has even served at the Singleton base, and his partner comes from Maitland so he has a few connections to this area.
While this will be Watt’s first time giving a book talk in the Cessnock area, he has been here before and is looking forward to the visit.
The event will feature a talk by Watt about his books, which he describes “garden-variety”, as well maybe a few jokes here and there.
“I don’t take myself seriously,” he said.
The event will be held at Kurri Library on Thursday, November 26 from 9.30am and bookings are essential, call 4993 4399 to secure your spot.
Beneath a Rising Sun will be available at the Book Den in Vincent Street for purchase and signing.
