The choir, which formed in August, won the ‘best regional community sing’ category for its rendition of Coldplay’s Viva La Vida.
More than 120 choirs entered the Sing For Good competition, which raises funds for Creativity Australia’s With One Voice program – supporting people depression, anxiety, loneliness, disadvantage, unemployment or homelessness.
Choir founder Emmie Hallett said she was delighted with the news that the group had been named a winner.
“I am so proud and so inspired by what an amazing group of people gather on a Wednesday night and what we have created in such a short space of time,” she said.
“(They) have all made sure Australia knows that there is something wonderful happening here in our town and our community, and it really is undeniably noisy.”
Sing for Good has received $70,000 in donations so far, and due to popular demand, will be extended until December 25. Further winners may be announced in early 2016.
Creativity Australia hopes to reach its target of $100,000 by Christmas to help change the tune for people in need.
