Josef says while it may be a tad embarrassing, it will be worth it to create a conversation about men’s mental and physical health.

It is Josef’s third year taking part in Movember – in which men grow moustaches in November to raise funds and awareness of men’s health issues including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.

The 28-year-old was diagnosed with depression five years ago, but it was after a friend suicided in 2013 that he first took part in the Movember campaign.

Josef says people may know him as a “happy-go-lucky gay guy” but described his depression as “tears of a clown”.

He said getting men to talk about their mental health can be difficult and that he wants to help change the stigma.

Josef also has a family history of prostate cancer, and a friend who has battled testicular cancer.

He started growing his moustache early this year because “depression doesn’t happen just one month a year”, and had raised $1000 by the end of October.

He appreciates the help of those who have shared his fundraising page as much as those who have donated.

“Sharing is just as valuable as a donation,” he said.

“It raises awareness and brings to reality the serious issues that we are facing.”
