The popular winger from the late 1960s and early 1970s passed away in his sleep overnight Thursday.
He was at home in Metford.
Just three months ago Wright was given a standing ovation at Maitland Leagues Club when he was named in the Pickers top 20 legends of all time.
Wright, who had Alzheimer’s disease, slowly made his way to the stage as the heartwarming applause continued and with a tear in his eye simply waved and said “thank you”.
Mercury readers also voted Wright the most popular Pickers player.
Wright played in three premiership campaigns for Maitland in a run of five consecutive Newcastle Rugby League grand final appearances between 1969 and 1973.
During that period Wright made a memorable tackle on Lakes star Jim Porter in the decider at No.1 Sportsground.
Wright celebrated his 70th birthday in recent years, which included a cake with a Pickers logo.
There will be a full report in Monday’s Mercury.
