Deacon is a former Cessnock Goannas first grade player who also had stints with the Kurri Bulldogs and Greta-Branxton Colts, and was part of the Cessnock Cutters team that took out the NHRL B-grade competition in 2014.
He was coaxed out of retirement by the Cutters for their one-and-only season, after retiring with a broken jaw the previous year with the Goannas.
The 32-year-old played reserve grade and open age for the Goannas in 2015, and was considering hanging up his boots – but after a call from the Hawks he decided to kick on for at least one more year.
“I was thinking about giving it away, but I’ve had a bit to do with the guys at the Hawks and they must have brought my name up,” he said.
He said the family-friendly environment of the all-age comp appealed to him, and that he’s looking forward to getting back into a coaching role after 10 years.
Deacon coached the Cessnock Goannas under-18s Division 1 side (which included current NRL player Joel Edwards) to the 2005 premiership.
Hawks president Ray Foster said a player of Deacon’s experience will fit in well at the club.
The Hawks will hold a family day at the Hotel Denman on Saturday, December 12. from 12.30pm. There will be a free barbecue and Santa will be there with giveaways. All current Hawks players are asked to attend, and new players are most welcome.
