The shelter is designed to house about 160 dogs but staff told the Mercury out-of-date microchips, storms and fireworks had inflated this number by 160 per cent.
Casey McFaden, who has worked at the shelter for more than six years, said she had never seen so many strays and surrenders come through the doors.
“It’s quite overwhelming,” she said.
“The staff are feeling worn down.
“They put in 120 per cent every day to make sure the animals are still getting the best of care.”
Ms McFaden said she hoped people would take the time to contact council or any impound facility to ensure microchip details were up to date.
“It’s much easier to just keep on top of it than to try to sort it out in an emergency.”
Ms McFaden said adoptions over the holiday period had been off the chain and she hoped Maitland residents would continue to adopt.
“Come and adopt today, they need forever homes,” she said.
Those interested in adopting an animal should contact the shelter on 4939 1555.
Last week the Mercury featured another 15 animals. Four of those found homes.
