Jaliens, whose playing career spanned more than 450 games across three countries, will take on a technical role and oversee junior development as well as participate in the senior squad.
The Bears made the announcement over the weekend and said they were delighted with the signing.
Jaliens will also kick-start a high performance junior academy, which could have benefits for the wider Hunter football community.
“It will provide junior football talent in the Lower and Upper Hunter Valley a fantastic opportunity to develop their skills under a great player,” Bears football manager Shane Johnson said.
“The Jaliens-led clinic will provide not only on-field skills, but the important off-field technical and social development required.
“Following an extensive investment during the off season, the Bears will provide the facilities, equipment and training fields for Kew’s academy.”
The academy will be in Newcastle as well.
Jaliens played 36 matches for the Newcastle Jets between 2013 and 2015, but in his second season the captain was one of a group sacked by then club owner Nathan Tinkler.
He then joined Melbourne City and scored a winner against the Jets late last A-League season.
The 37-year-old defender has previously enjoyed stints at home with Sparta, Willem II and AZ between 1997 and 2011 before spending two seasons in Poland with Wisla Krakow.
His 15 internationals for The Netherlands included a World Cup appearance in 2006 and spot as an over-age player at the Beijing Olympics.
Back to the Northern NSW National Premier League and the Bears have upcoming trials against Thornton (February 13) and Cooks Hill (February 17) before a second round FFA Cup tie with either Beresfield or Nelson Bay (February 27-28).
Weston steps up the intensity next month with practice games against Adamstown (March 5), the Emerging Jets (March 13) and Broadmeadow (March 19).
They are then away to Hamilton at Darling Street Oval on April 1.
The Bears opening encounter will be at home to the Emerging Jets on April 10 before tackling title holders Edgeworth at Jack McLaughlin Oval five days later.
