Each year Cessnock City Council offers scholarships worth $2500 each to help ease the financial burden on students.
Some of Kasey’s accomplishments include 2013 Lions Youth of the Year, participation in the Rotary Model United Nations Assembly and captaining the Rotary Effie O’Neill Debating team.
The University of Newcastle student said 2015 was the most challenging year so far in her academic career.
“I’m currently working as a mathematics tutor during term and the scholarship has enabled me to focus on studying rather than taking extra shifts,” Kasey said.
“Travelling to uni every day from Abermain takes its financial toll and I’ve been able to put the scholarship to good use to help with transport costs along with safety gear for my upcoming practical experience.”
Kasey received a three-month work placement with Glencore in Mackay this semester break and it is the first step toward her goal to travel with her degree.
As an environmental engineer, Kasey hopes to contribute to the community and environment, making a difference through her work.
There are 13 scholarships on offer this year, thanks to the generosity of Cessnock businesses and community groups.
They cover a range of disciplines including engineering, mining, medical, undergraduate studies, tourism and post-HSC.
Students from Year 10 through to TAFE and university who reside in the Cessnock local government area are welcome to apply.
Applications have been extended until Wednesday, March 2. Go to council’s website or call Gina Radford on 4993 4210 for more information.
