Branxton/Greta’s Icebreakers Carers Support Group, supported by the Sunflower Centre, helps people who have a loved one with a drug and/or alcohol issue and mental illness.
It involves people sharing experiences, provides education and information and empowers carers to better support their loved ones.
Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at Greta Workers Club, with the public forums held before every second meeting.
Volunteer support group leader Sonnie Moran said the idea behind the public forums is for people from all walks of life to be able to discuss their problems in a safe and supportive environment and receive much-needed information and education.
She said many people come away realising that other people share their struggles, and feel comfortable sharing their stories.
“In small communities there’s a lot of stigma,” she said.
“People feel a bit more comforted in realising they’re not alone.”
Different topics are discussed at each public forum to provide a wider range of information.
“We bring the experts to them,” Ms Moran said.
“We’re trying to reach out as much as we can.”
“There’s something for everyone along the way.”
The upcoming forum topic is domestic violence, with Stacey Gately from women’s refuge Carrie’s Place as the guest speaker.
Ms Gately will be talking about safety for women and children, what people can do to support and general education and information about domestic violence.
The public forum will be held from 7.30pm to 8.30pm, with the carers support group meeting held afterwards which people are welcome to stay on and attend.
For people who may feel apprehensive about coming along, Ms Moran said there is a private entrance into the auditorium of the workers club and it can be arranged for someone to meet with you prior.
