The 59-year-old was air lifted to John Hunter Hospital with suspected broken bones and cuts after the incident at The Vintage Golf Course at Crowne Plaza, Lovedale, about 9.15am on Tuesday.
The Mercury understands the man was the only occupant of the cart when the vehicle travelled off the fourth green and several metres across a path, before it went over the edge of the steep embankment.
Cessnock District Rescue Squad captain Trevor Milgate said his crew helped paramedics lift the man from the creek using a sling and vertical rope technique.
“The chap was seriously injured - he needed specialist care,” Mr Milgate said.
Paramedics then stabilised the man before the Westpac Rescue Helicopter took him to hospital.
Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley general manager Robert Coates said circumstances surrounding the incident were still being determined.
He said the man was part of a group five of social golfers who were not staying at the hotel.
“He was playing with a team of golfers and they quickly responded, rang triple zero,” Mr Coates said.
“Some of our green keepers were close by so they responded to support.
“The main thing we want is for the gentleman to have a quick recovery.”
