Earlier report
A 20-year-old woman is fighting for her life after the Holden Commodore she was driving was involved in a high-speed, head-on collision with a four-wheel-drive on John Renshaw Drive on Sunday.
Emergency services, including rescue squads and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, were called to the scene of the crash near the Black Hill Road intersection about 11am.
Debris and glass covered the road.
The 4WD had rolled onto its side and its front driver's-side wheel had been torn off.
All occupants of the 4WD managed to scramble out of the vehicle.
The Commodore came to rest about 10 metres away, with the female driver and her male passenger trapped in the wreckage with serious injuries.
Police closed the road in both directions.
Cessnock District Rescue Squad captain Trevor Milgate said his crew worked for almost an hour to dismantle the doors, roof and dashboard of the Commodore to free the occupants.
Mr Milgate said the female driver appeared to have serious injuries to her chest, arms and legs.
He said the male passenger appeared to have chest injuries.
"The four [occupants] from the 4WD all got out and were treated on the side of the road," Mr Milgate said.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter flew the female driver to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.
The Newcastle Crash Investigation Unit are investigating the incident.
