Cessnock City Council’s last bi-annual playground audit revealed Bridges Hill Park playground was approaching its end of life, with the playground deemed inadequate for a regional park.
In considering a suitable replacement, council’s strategic recreation and community facilities planner Paul Burton said the team saw an opportunity to develop a masterplan for all three sites.
“Bridges Hill Park, Convent Hill and East End Oval are all located immediately north of the Cessnock CBD and presented an excellent opportunity to create an integrated recreation precinct to service both locals and visitors,” Mr Burton said.
“The draft masterplan aims to identify and address opportunities and constraints that will ensure future investment in the sites generate maximum benefit for the community.
“It will also assist council in attracting funding from external sources.”
A regional themed playground and improved access will be first off the rank, thanks to funding received through the Federal Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund.
The council received a $950,000 dollar-for-dollar grant from the fund, which also an upgrade of the civic precinct and better pedestrian, cyclist and traffic access through the CBD.
The Bridges Hill, Convent Hill and East End Oval masterplan is one of four projects council will submit to the next round of the NSW Government’s Restart NSW – Resources for Regions program.
The draft masterplan on exhibition until 4pm on March 25.
It can be viewed at council’s administration building, Cessnock and Kurri libraries and on council’s website.
