The company intends to set up in Newcastle and focus on meeting customers needs’ in the city before it gradually expands into other areas.

It is calling for potential drivers to submit an application to join their Lower Hunter team.

An information evening was held at Newcastle Town Hall on Wednesday where the company explained its purpose and procedures to potential drivers.

Drivers have to have a licence and go through various checks before they can work for the company. 

At this stage it is not known whether the service will come to Maitland, although the company acknowledges the benefits it can bring to regional areas.

Uber is the latest way to get around and works off an app where you tap and a car arrives to your exact location. Payment for the ride is cashless.
